Blockchain, explained in two minutes

What is the blockchain?

The blockchain is a digital book that doesn't sit in a cabinet but simultaneously on many thousands of computers around the world. Each of those computers holds a complete copy. Whoever makes an entry sends it to the entire network, and once enough participants agree that the entry is valid, it gets noted on a new "page", a so-called block.

Each new block contains a cryptographic checksum of the previous block. If anyone retroactively changed an old entry, all subsequent checksums would no longer match. The whole book would obviously be forged and every other computer would reject the forgery. This very chaining is what gives the blockchain its name.

Three essential properties

Public. Anyone may look in at any time. You don't need an account, no permission, no software, a normal browser is enough. What's on the blockchain can be seen by the entire world.

Decentralised. There is no central server, no central bank, no company guarding the book. As long as the network runs somewhere in the world, the data is available. No one can pull the plug, because there is no single plug.

Immutable. What's once written into a block stays there. There is no "edit" button, no hidden backdoor for authorities, no way to rewrite old entries. Even the inventor of a blockchain cannot change their own old entries any more.

And what about cryptocurrencies?

The most well-known application of blockchain are cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ether. The very three properties above, public, decentralised, immutable, are what make them interesting as money: no one can spend an amount twice, no one can freeze an account, no one can create new money out of nothing. The blockchain is therefore far more than digital money. It is a machine for non-erasable truth. Money is just one of many truths you can record there.

Why do we use Base?

Writing directly to Ethereum is expensive and slow. Base is a layer-2 blockchain on Ethereum: it gathers many entries off the main chain, bundles them, and only stores the cryptographic checksum of that bundle on Ethereum. That makes writing roughly a hundred times cheaper and brings confirmations in seconds instead of minutes, without compromising security. Every bundle stays mathematically verifiable against Ethereum, so your entry is just as immutable as it would be on the main chain itself.

Base was built by Coinbase, one of the world's largest crypto platforms, listed on the US stock exchange. That gives the network the institutional stability we need for a promise meant to last forever. For your Love Lock this means: cheap, fast and yet still immutable, public and decentralised.

Why does this fit Love Locks?

You probably know the love locks on bridge railings. Couples engrave their names, lock the padlock onto the railing and throw the key into the river. A beautiful gesture, but bridges get renovated, railings get replaced, padlocks get cut off by city authorities once they become a structural concern. What was meant as an eternal promise actually has an expiry date.

A Love Lock on the blockchain is the digital answer to that. Instead of a padlock on a railing, you place an entry into the world's distributed book. Instead of a key thrown away, there is an address under which your entry can be found forever.

Public like the padlock on the railing, anyone may look.

Decentralised in a way no padlock in the world could ever be. No city authority can remove your entry, no provider can close your account, no vault is ever cleared.

Immutable in a sense even steel cannot reach. No weather, no bolt cutter, no renovation can touch the entry. As long as people run computers, your lock lives.
